Indigenous Tourism in NSW

“Aboriginal culture starts with its people. Aboriginal guides open a door into a world that many people don’t know still exists. A world where past, present and future meet. There’s nothing more exciting for a traveler than a totally new experience. That’s what memories are made of.”
– Dr Aden Ridgeway, Gumbaynggirr man and former chair of Indigenous Tourism Australia

Geomancia is a not-for-profit organisation based at Bathurst in New South Wales, Australia. We work with rural, regional and remote communities to advance their goals for sustainable development. We believe that tourism could be one way to increase Indigenous employment and economic activity in regional NSW. To this end, we were funded under the Commonwealth Building Better Regions Fund to develop “A strategy to grow Indigenous heritage tourism in Central NSW.” You can find a consultation draft of the strategy (in poster form) here: Link. As part of this work, we also identified some practical resources and contacts that could help Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people thinking about getting into Indigenous Tourism in NSW:

Destination NSW (Link)
Destination NSW provides assistance to Aboriginal tourism operators in the development of their businesses, from concept to market, under their Aboriginal Tourism Action Plan (Link). Aboriginal Tourism Workshops are held twice a year to update existing and emerging operators and to support the development of Aboriginal tourism businesses across the State.
